NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2005
What a day we had at the National Championships which were held at Worcester on the 16th October 2005. Adam Laurence who is the coach
took 6 fighters along with himself and in all we left with 8 trophies.
First up was 10 year old Ashley Whitehouse in the -155 Novice boys section. He fought hard and brave to get into the final in which his
opponent was just a little bit stronger than himself and he took 2nd place, well done Ashley keep up the hard work!!
Then came our best result of the day, Jason Day (13) was in the +155 novice boys section with Connor Morris who is also 13. Even though
Connor fought hard he took 3rd place but team mate Jason fought well through to the final to win and take 1st place. Well done lads.
Then it was the turn of the adult fighters, the first one to fight was Tom Day. He had two hard fights and couldn’t quite make it into the finals
of the -75kg mens intermediate section, but he still walked away with a good third place with this being only his 2nd intermediate fight. Well
done Tom!!
Next to fight was Lee Knight and boy what a fight he had in the -60kg advanced section, he fought brave and hard against the lad who he
always seems to meet, only to be pipped in the final with a 9-10 on the bell to take 2nd. Good fight Lee you will take first soon.
Then up to fight was Andy English, who met the world champion in the semi-finals of the -70kg section. He fought well considering it
was only his 2nd advanced fight and came away with 3rd place. Well done Andy!!
Finally to fight was the instructor Adam Laurence and wow what a couple of fights! He took his first opponent out on a 5 point lead in 20
seconds to put him in the semi final where again he got another five point lead, using many of his own advanced techniques. This took
him into the final, where he then took 2nd place. Not content with 2nd place he decided to fight in the open-weight and boy he pushed the
World Champion all the way to a final decision of 1st to score, and with only a split second between the points Adam unfortunately took 2nd
place. Well done Adam!
BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2005
Well this is the end of another year of competitions and what a great way to finish. On Sunday 11th December 2005 Lee Knight took students,
12 year old Christopher Whitehouse and his 11 year old brother Ashley Whitehouse to the British Open Championships in which all year,
points are accumulated to fight off against Wales and Scotland for the overall British Champion. Myself and the club would like to
congratulate Lee Knight for becoming the overall British Champion in the -60 kg points section and the -60 kg continuous section. Following
this were the normal fights for the British Open Championships.
First to fight was Ashley Whitehouse and even though he stepped up to the +155cm section he fought hard and strong but his opponent was
a lot bigger and stronger than Ashley, and he just couldn’t find a way to beat him but never mind Ashley you will get there in the end.
Then up to fight was his brother Christopher Whitehouse and what a fight he had. He fought with determination and aggression to but also
due to the size of his opponent failed to take a place, although this has been the best that Chris has fought to date in competition, so well done
we are all proud of you!
Lee Knight was last up to fight and decided to try the -65kgs instead of his normal -60kgs section and wow what a fight you would have
thought that they were fighting in the final, not the quarter final. It was a strong tough fight and Lee was just pipped by Matt Ogden from
Wales who all season has been the -65kgs section leader. Well done Lee we are all proud of you, keep up the hard work and you deserved to
be the British Champion, hopefully many of the other students will follow in your footsteps but whatever the outcome I am still proud of all
my students and the effort they have put in this year.
Lets all have a very happy and successful new year.
Adam Laurence (instructor)
